Where is stocks reservoir

Allow 3. For this route we will be following a circuit of the reservoir that is waymarked by white arrows on a blue background. Facing the reservoir take the track leading from the right-hand corner of the car park. Follow this surfaced path. The first feature worth visiting is a birdwatcher's hide on the left of the path.

Here you'll quickly come to appreciate the importance of Stocks Reservoir as a nature site. From the hide, continue along a broad track which becomes grassy, passing through a gate and continuing on to reach a stone bridge over Hasgill Beck. Cross the bridge and continue ahead for about yards, as the trail climbs steadily towards the ruined farmhouse of New House.

Before reaching the ruined farmhouse building, turn left on a broad track. The trail breaks out into open pasture and sweeps down to the River Hodder. After crossing the footbridge, the path continues over pasture to a kissing gate. Go through it and turn right. For the next section of the walk you will be out of sight of the reservoir, as you climb up alongside Copped Hill Clough to reach a T-junction with a broad track.

Turn left onto the broad track and bear right at the next junction to follow the level track leading around Esk Hill. This track was once one of the many 3-foot gauge railway lines that served to facilitate the construction of the reservoir between and for the Fylde Water Board. This track provides excellent walking for the next two miles. To meet this situation the Fylde Waterboard constructed a dam and flooded the head of the Hodder Valley to create this reservoir. The project required an army of over men at its height.

Although outside the area of flooding, the church, vicarage, school and a number of farms were demolished to protect water quality. You will pass a jetty on your left where the motor boats for fishing are moored. Beyond this, the track reaches the fishing lodge which is home to a cafe in the summer months and a complex of utility buildings. From the lodge, the trail bears left to take a service road which passes through a Life for Life memorial forest.

This scheme involves the planting of a memorial trees, installing memorial benches and memorial plaques to commemorate loved ones. Over time, the trees will develop into a beautiful organised forest that everyone can enjoy. The planting at this site started in with profits raised going to help healthcare organisations. Here the way leaves the service road and leads onto the reservoir dam. This holds back 12 billion litres of water.

Cross the dam with the reservoir to your left. Part way along, turn right down the steps and take the service track to the end crossing the overflow that returns water to the River Hodder. Turn left on a path with the reservoir on your left, crossing meadows. As you gain a little height you will have fine views across the water towards the Bowland Fells. After passing by a conifer plantation the trail leads down to the road, Hole Head Lane. Let's keep active outside everyday.
