March 4, at am. Thanks for this article. I have had this debate with myself for decades. But, I have come to the conclusion to stick with ST tires a couple years ago. Speaks for itself I think. March 8, at pm. David said:. March 10, at am. After multiple failures with different brands of ST tires on several trailers, cargo and travel, including several thousand dollars residual damage on an Airstream following a blowout, I ended my tire problems by switching to properly specified LT tires… lesson finally learned!

What are ST Tires? Heat Buildup Proper Inflation: Proper inflation is listed in two places. The ST vs. LT and ST tires do not have the same load rating when comparing size for size, so make sure whatever tire you choose has a sufficient load capacity for your RV. If the tires you are switching to have a higher load capacity, that does not automatically increase your GVWR.
You will probably have to choose a larger tire size to find an LT tire of equal or greater load capacity. Make sure there is sufficient clearance all around the tire. When you change your tire size, you will need a properly sized wheel as well. Changing out tires and wheels can be rather costly. Conclusion At the end of the day, it boils down to this. This is one of the reasons they are designated for use on trailers. Truck and automobile tires do not have to withstand the weight and stress that is put on trailer tires. The only way to know if a tire is overloaded is to weigh the trailer by individual wheel position.
It is quite possible to weigh an axle and be within the axle weight rating, but when the tire positions on each axle end are weighed separately a tire rating can be overloaded. Failure to maintain the correct tire pressure for the load can result in fast tread wear, uneven wear and poor handling which can all lead to tire failure. Remember, the load rating for a tire is only accurate if the tire is properly inflated for the load.
Under-inflated tires cause extreme heat buildup that leads to tire failure. Tire manufacturers publish tire load and inflation tables with information on the correct tire inflation pressure for the load. A big reason tires fail is they are not properly inflated for the load.
The appearance of the tire can look normal on the outside, but the internal damage is not visible. Tires with internal damage caused by under- inflation can fail catastrophically without warning. This should not however serve as an excuse to not weigh the trailer. Improper weight distribution. When a manufacturer builds an RV weight distribution is critical. The manufacturer did its job distributing the weight when the unit was built, now the RV owner must do their job by properly distributing any weight added to the trailer.
Some tire overload conditions can be corrected by distributing the weight in the RV, but you still need to weigh the RV by individual wheel position to make sure there is not an overload condition. Increasing the inflation pressure by 10 psi 69 kPa does not provide any additional load carrying capacity.
Do not exceed the maximum pressure for the wheel. The cold inflation pressure must not exceed 10 psi 69 kPa beyond the inflation specified for the maximum load of the tire. LT vs. ST Tires: I mentioned earlier that lots of trailer owners made the decision to switch from ST tires to LT tires for use on their travel trailer or 5 th wheel trailer. Lately some trailer owners—and even manufacturers—are equipping trailers with LT, or Light Truck, tires.
American RV manufacturers, except some making compacts and popups with wheels smaller than 13 inches, equip each new trailer with radials. You can run bias ply tires on your camper and radials on your tow vehicle, but you cannot mix bias and radial tires on the trailer itself. Bias plies are cheaper but have a shorter life and get lower fuel mileage. Some builders offer better tires as an option. Economy trailers and the increasingly popular light travel trailers usually have basic ST tires.
They will have load capacities suitable for the loaded trailer, but they probably are rated 65 mph. Better ST tires are speed rated M, to 81 mph. You can replace the standard tires with STs that have a greater load range, such as D or E. Most trailer tires, especially the more affordable, are made in China. Shop carefully. For a while, Chinese-made LT tires and high-performance passenger tires had the same problem. Although some Chinese tires are poorly constructed, others are better built—and cost more.
I have given them a good workout and I am happy with them. Originally Posted by azjack. Attached Thumbnails. Originally Posted by gbaglo. What does rated like LT tires mean? Aren't all tires rated? There has been a debate raging for years on another RV forum on trailer tires vs Light Truck tires. This means ST- and LT-sized tires can carry the full weight rating branded on the sidewalls when used on a trailer. The Goodyear Endurance ST load range D specs are: max load per lbs per tire, max inflation 65 psi, weight is 29 pounds, I have no opinion to give on this, but I can see benefits with either tire.
