With Chicago Fire comes plenty of action , drama, and of course, romance. While their situation has changed drastically between the start of the show and the end of Season 9, their relationship still has some fans split. Season 4 saw Dawson and Casey lose the baby, but the two remain together and support one another through the traumatic event. They formally adopted a foster son named Louie, but eventually gave Louie up to his biological father when he entered the picture.
Later in the series, Gabby learns more information about Rebecca and the two become firm friends. Gabby lives with the guilt associated with her close friend Leslie Shay's death. She dies in an explosion on duty. It is later revealed by Gabby that she suggested to Leslie the two swapped places so that Leslie could get experience in her position. In Gabby's thinking, it should have been her who had died and not her friend.
This guilt continues to consume her and she seeks therapy for Leslie's unanticipated death. Gabby dreams of having children but seems to have no luck in this area. She and Matthew Casey attempt to adopt a boy named Louie. However, when Louie's father returns for the child, she decided he will be better off with his natural dad. The two continue to try to have a baby, but, sadly, the development of an aneurysm in Gabby's brain puts her at risk for death during pregnancy and childbirth.
She is willing to take the risk by Matthew isn't. One of Gabby's best quotes was when saving a life put her at animosity with the law and she retorted that if saving a life was a criminal offense, the protocol of the police was out of the whack and new rules needed to be made. A good point put across in her typical no-nonsense way.
He proposes again to her and she accepts. They can't get married and try to hide their relationship since Dawson works under Casey as a candidate and she can't be married to the leading Lieutenant. In the Season 3 finale, it is revealed that she is pregnant with Casey's baby. At the beginning of season 4, Dawson experiences pains in her lower abdomen and is rushed into hospital.
Matt meets her there and supports a confused Gabriela. When Gabby comes around, Matt proceeds to tell her this information. However, she doesn't seem fazed. It is shown that there is a problem with the surgery and a second one is needed to fix the mistakes. When Gabby comes around a second time this time realizes what had happened she breaks down and Matt supports her.
In season 4, at the mid-season finale it is shown that Casey and Dawson are engaged and are more in love than ever. In Season 5 , Dawson and Casey get married in order to make the adoption of their foster son, Louie, more credible instead of crediting Dawson as a single mother. They subsequently give up Louie to his real father.
In Season 6 , Casey is honored in a ceremony. He is shown to have survived the building fire. Towards the end of season 6, Dawson tell Casey she wants to try having children again. They do not divorce when it is discovered that Dawson has an aneurysm from her first pregnancy and therefore could die. She subsequently leaves in Season 7. In season 8 Dawson makes a brief return for the mid-season finale, and invites Casey to visit her in Puerto Rico on his next furlough.
