Catherine has been babbling obscenely about Sebastian's mysterious death that she witnessed while on vacation together in Spain the previous summer.

Ordinarily, that would have meant he would have been fired and replaced, but his good friend Dame Elizabeth Taylor saved his job by insisting she would not do this movie without him.

Film versions of Tennessee Williams great plays can be a little frustrating, especially for those of us lucky enough to have seen a fine production of the play on stage. But this film version is actually extremely good.
The cast more or less speaks for itself. Katherine Hepburn is not quite as repulsive as I imagine Mrs Venable to have become, but this is a movie version after all and somehow Katherine Hepburn seemed to become increasingly ghastly as the movie goes on - strong work on her part and the Director's part I shouldn't wonder.
Taylor and Clift are predictably good. Most Tennessee William's plays had their endings tampered with for Hollywood and this piece is no exception.
However, there is only a subtle difference between the ending of the film and the ending of the play, unlike the cringe-inducing changes to some "Streetcar" and "Cat" being the main offenders. There cannot be, must not be any other. Sebastian died, suddenly, at Cabeza de Lobo, last summer. Under what circumstances? Violet was not with her son at the time, for once. For what reasons? Something remains unsaid. Something should definitely not be as it is.
It also constitutes a blind spot, since Violet cannot admit that the real Sebastian does not coincide with the unimpeachable icon to which she vows near-fanatical devotion. By traveling without her for the first time, her son escapes from her. Moreover, he betrays her by accepting the company of his cousin, Catherine. Something unspeakable happened last summer.
And now the dashing, debonair Sebastian Venable is dead. His young cousin is desperate to tell the truth about what happened, even if it finishes her. Renowned American playwright Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire has created the ultimate high-stakes battle of wills between Violet Venable Robyn Nevin , the ruthless matriarch of a prominent New Orleans family, and her niece Catherine Eryn Jean Norvill — the sole witness to her cousin's shocking death.
In the middle is Doctor Cukrowicz Mark Leonard Winter , a neurosurgeon under pressure to discern torrid memory from grim reality before any more lives are spoiled.
